locked up arundel jail poster.jpg

Hidden beneath Arundel Town Hall lies one of West Sussex’s most compelling historic sites: the Arundel Jailhouse, a subterranean Georgian/Victorian-era prison dating back to 1836. Once a functioning lockup for the courtroom above, this underground complex still carries the weight of its past in every brick, corridor, and echo.

Visitors enter via Duke’s Path, stepping through an iron gate and into a lobby that immediately transports you back to the stark austerity of a 19th‑century jail. The atmosphere is unmistakable — cool air, low ceilings, and the unmistakable sense of confinement that once defined this space.

Though no longer used for incarceration, the original cells remain intact, their iron doors, brick floors, and narrow layouts preserved as they were nearly two centuries ago. These details make the Jailhouse one of the most authentic historic environments in the region.
